As I sat down sipping my cup of coffee one day, I started asking myself, “How do I use my time wisely today?”
No matter who we are, where we live, and our status in life, we all have one great equalizer – 24 hours a day.
And it’s what we all do within that time frame that dictates what we can achieve in our life.
One of the significant challenges you would face as you transition from your regular job into a freelance or a business owner is better optimizing your time to accomplish more tasks effectively.
To be more intentional with your time creates this sense of awareness on how you allocate your time every day. This routine can help to make you less at risk for time waster activities and procrastination.
Let’s dive right in!
Table of Contents
1. Fight off that Snooze Button.
When your alarm clock sounds, be prepared to fight your first enemy for that day – the snooze button!
We all have been there. Hitting that snooze button and hoping you can get that 5 minutes more extra sleep, everything would be better.
The truth is that when you hit that snooze button, you are taking a hit on your confidence and motivation. You are signaling your brain to think it is okay to drift into the path of least resistance.
The power, confidence, and motivation you gain as you conquer that snooze button every day can drastically change your life.
Check out my guide on how to wake up at 5 am and not feel tired.
2. Create a solid morning Routine
After you finally wake up, what does your morning look like?
For me, it’s this:
|Wake up after the alarm rings. NEVER press the snooze button.||Like any space rocket, waking up and not hitting the snooze is your “LIFT OFF.”|
|Fix the bed.||Fixing your bed will be your first well-accomplished task for the day.|
|Use the restroom.||Essentials.|
|Drink one glass of water.||This task increases your energy level, boosts your metabolism.|
|Go to my home office and turn on my PC.||Every huge task starts with a single, simple task. By turning my PC on, I set my mind to accomplish my next colossal task: typing an article.|
|Set 1 hour of uninterrupted time. No smartphone use.||Setting a time frame and eliminating sources of distractions helps me get into the zone of writing an article.|
|Take a small break.||This helps re-optimize your time.|
|Go for a 30-minute brisk walk/run while listening to my audiobook/podcast.||Exercise and feeding your mind with helpful information go a long way.|
|Finish typing my article and published it.||Every task needs to be completed.|
|Prepare breakfast.||First meal for the day.|
Now, these tasks work for me. It may or may not work for you due to multiple reasons.
My point is this, having a solid morning routine can help kickstart and maintain your momentum for that day.
Do these every day, and you will have better mornings, which translates to better and more productive days. As a result, you will have a better life.
3. Plan out your day.
“You may delay, but time will not.”(Video) you can pull the joystick up, but why?
During his lifetime, Benjamin Franklin was one of the founding members of the USA. Still, he achieved many great things, such as discovering the lightning rod, theory of electricity, bifocals, and the armonica, which both Mozart and Beethoven used.
How did he do all these during his lifetime, considering his formal education ended when he was only ten years old?
Check out his time blocking schedule.
-From Ben Franklin’s Autobiography
My point here is this; if you organize and plan out your day and become intentional with your time, you can achieve anything in life.
4. Prioritize what matters.
“No two objects can occupy a single space at a single time.”
This holds to what we do with our time. We cannot focus our 100% attention and energy on two tasks at a time.
We have to prioritize.
In his NY Times bestseller book, The One Thing, Gary Keller stated that when you do this ONE Thing, everything else you could do to accomplish your goal will now be either doable with less effort or no longer even necessary.
Always ask yourself these questions:
- “What’s the one thing I can do, such that bydoing it, everything else is more accessibleor unnecessary?
- “Will this task contribute to the progress towards my goal?”
5. Set Time-Bounded Goals.
Parkinson’s Law states that “work expands to fill the time available for its completion.”
If you set a time frame to complete a specific task in a year, you will achieve that selected task within a year. BUT, if you put a narrower time frame, say six months, the same job will be accomplished in 6 months.
Placing a time limit on some of your most essential tasks prevents you from stuffing in some time wasters and procrastination in between. Thus, helping you achieve more in a day.
6.Allocate some downtime within your day.
Make yourself a warm tea or coffee, take some short walks, take a breather, and do meditation and journaling. It would help if you had 5 to 10-minute mini-breaks in a day to help re-align your focus.
Think of your mini-breaks like a “pit stop” for formula one car racing.
7. Schedule time for mundane tasks.
These are the mundane tasks that need to be done but can still be considered essential. Examples of these tasks are setting up that doctor’s appointment, paying your bills, budgeting, cleaning your house, walking your pet, and a lot more.
Setting a specific time frame for these tasks ensures you are not leaving essential functions on the table.
8. Re-evaluate your day.
Documenting how you spent your day can help you have a bird’s eye view of what needs to be improved in your daily routine.
Try asking yourself some of these questions without judgment involved.
- Where did your time go each day? How was it spent?
- What times of day were the most productive?
- When was your brain least energized? When was little accomplished?
- Were there “wasted time” that could be used more intentionally?
This step is crucial since you are making some adjustments to your routine for the next day.
Remember, progress doesn’t mean it has no flaws. You have to keep re-optimizing and re-calibrating your routines every single day.
9. Set a pre-bedtime Routine.
Your pre-bedtime routine is as essential as your morning routine.
As you kickstart your day with a better morning routine, having a pre-bedtime can help you have better restful and quality sleep.
Here are some ideas for a pre-bedtime routine bysleepfoundation.org.
|Decide on a Set Bedtime.||Your brain starts winding down for sleep a few hours before bedtime. This is somewhat a transitional period before sleep.|
|Leave the Electronics Alone.||When you use these devices, that blue light floods your brain, tricking it into thinking it’s daytime. As a result, your brain suppresses melatonin production7 and works to stay awake.|
|Have a Light Snack or Bedtime Tea.||Having a light snack can help you avoid feeling hungry in the middle of the night.|
|Take a Warm Bath.||Taking a warm bath about an hour before you go to sleep. Your body will heat up from the water and cool down quickly as the water evaporates, creating a sensation that makes you feel tired and relaxed.|
|Listen to Music.||Close your eyes, listen to the music and let it distract you from your worries and calm you down.|
|Stretch, Breathe, and Relax.||Relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercises or progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) can allow you to let go of physical and mental tension.|
|Practice Meditation.||You can practice mindfulness meditation by simply closing your eyes and allowing yourself to focus on your thoughts and feelings.|
|Read a Good Book.||A book with a plot that’s drama-free, even dull, can be best read before bedtime.|
|Write Down a To-Do List or Journal.||Many people find it therapeutic to journal, and doing so in the evening lets them sort out their thoughts and feelings before going to bed.|
|Prep Your Bedroom.||Dedicate part of your bedtime routine to transforming your bedroom into a sleep oasis. Make a ritual out of making things as calm, dark, and quiet as possible.|
According to sleepfoundation.org, Sleep is an essential function1 thatallows your body and mind to recharge, leaving you refreshed and alert when you wake up.
Without enough sleep, the brain cannot function properly.
According to MayoClinic, adults need to have at least 7 hours of sleep a night.
Having a solid daily routine can help you have “enough” hours of sleep at night.
